Vox is Confusing or is it just ME?
Okay, no one reads this thing, and so I'm probably not going to get any answers unless I stand in the long line of SixApart feeders-back but just in case you stumbled on this blog today and want to give this girl a hand here...
What is the deal with the arrangement of communities here and why does it make no sense to me? Maybe it's because this is my sober time and nothing ever makes sense to me then, but that's the only way altered states of consciousness are properly enjoyed, to have significant amounts of sobriety between them, so it's a curse I must bear.
But why can't I change the names of my "Neighbourhoods" to something other than Friends, Family and Friends and Family, because that's retarded?
(Yes, I've been watching too much South Park lately. What else can I do for a guilty pleasure during sobriety time?)
But seriously, this is just stupid, and I've looked and there doesn't seem to be a way to change it. I'm a little unclear on this concept of Neighborhoods to begin with.
Maybe I should just go back to Livejournal.
They've made all their frigging design templates look like the ones here, anyway...
Another thing. There's this little box I'm s'pozedta check if my post "may be offensive". To whom? I mean, most television, pop music, celebrity gossip and all the other stupid ads on Vox are totally offensive to ME, but my drug posts are surely offensive to SOMEONE.
This is kind of a dumb thing, really, because exactly whose standards am I supposed to use here?
It's shit like this that gives us vague and ominous things like the Patriot Act. Or to be more exact, causes us to tolerate them, or be more inclined towards tolerating the intolerable.
Yes, I find the Patriot Act very, VERY offensive. But that doesn't mean it should be hidden from the public. Are you getting my point here?
Comments
I think the "this may be offensive" post is to ensure that if other members report your post as offensive, vox can say, "you were warned," it probably portects vox somehow, and there's probably a database of offensive posts somewhere that ensures that you're being monitored.
There isn't a way (yet) to change the structure of the friends/family neighborhoods.
I sigh and roll my eyes at yet another instance of lawsuitphobia that causes communities in which we must mince around treading on eggshells. Offensive, I repeat, to whom? I guess you mean "the sort of jerks who whine to admins when they see anything sexual, drug related, or (to an illogically lesser extent) violent.
I think I'll start whining to admins about something usually considered just fine but which I find puerile or idiotic, such as the endless gab about celebrities, their diets and pregnancies and boob jobs and love affairs. I'll be a nutjob and claim to represent some focus group dedicated to reversing idol-oogling and threaten press releases and lawsuits unless celeb gossip posts have "warning, this post may be potentially offensive owing to content that is STUPID" disclaimers.
Heh, that would be quite a hoot! :-)
Similarly, you can select "Groups" to view only the posts that have been made in Groups to which you belong. Selecting "Voxwatch" and then "Recent Activity" shows you all the subsequent activity where you have posted comments to other Vox bloggers.
Welcome aboard. You're my newest neighbour.
I am also totally amazed that these templates have no means by which we can change the colours of the links. I'm allergic to this baby-blue blech, but all the black background themes have blue links. I never saw a blogclusterware site that didn't let the user do simple HTML tweaks like changing their categories' names or link colours. Any idea why this is so forced-genericised? I know Six Apart can do better, for some reason they seem to have opted not to.
One more annoying question. One of the things about the neighbourhood concept that is unclear to me, how does someone end up in your neighbourhood, like, how did I end up your neighbour? (I'm the sort of neighbour they're always calling the cops about...heehee...)
I'll take my chances on calling the cops. Besides, unlike the real world, I can delete you as a neighbour any time I like.
So, be nice...
hey, thanks...what I'm trying to figure out is how you managed to end up seeing it...did it come up at random?
I'm not un-nice, just really outre and counterculty...is it just me or is Vox deliberately going for a "suburbs of the net" ambience? I can't find any bands of freaks...all the music is so...floral. Was this just coincidental, and the straights just sort of all ended up here, or did Vox seek to be a sort of a tame milieu? I just want to know, since if it's inappropriate for me to be here,I'm not serving anyone's interests by running around half wacked when the crowd won't "get" it.
What made you want to add my blog? It's not my "real" one, that's at http://mesila333.livejournal.com - but I just closed it, because of a complicated relationship issue (my ex's girlfriend keeps reading it through secondary spying accounts or at least I believe she is...so I have to close down a while. Looking for a new venue, but would like something artier and more...pleasantly druggish.
I guess you'll have to have a look around to see if Vox suits. Maybe do a search in Groups to see if there are any groups that cater for your interests.
I'm an old fogey Aussie mainly posting about politics at the moment, but do like to muse about the universe and life when in the mood. Not very encouraging, I know...
